Moldovan president meets members of Group of Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in European Parliament

President Nicolae Timofti today met members of a delegation of the Group of Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats of the European Parliament (EP).

The president appreciated the constant support showed by the European Parliament to the Chisinau-based authorities in the process of EU integration.

Nicolae Timofti said the European institution's gesture of solidarity for Moldova, expressed by liberalising the EU market for Moldovan products, would allow Moldovan producers to overcome the current temporary difficulties.

President Nicolae Timofti stressed that the Association Agreement with the EU offered Moldova a unique opportunity to modernise the country, which would allow strengthening democratic institutions and improve living standards.

The members of the delegation of the group of Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats of the European Parliament welcomed the progress made by Moldova in its European path.

President of the Party of European Socialists, Bulgarian MEP Sergei Stanishev informed President Timofti that the European Parliament would ratify the Association Agreement between Moldova and the European Union on 13 November.

"The Association Agreement and visa abolition were not given as a present to Moldova, but were gained by the citizens and the political class in Chisinau due to the implemented reforms," said Sergei Stanishev.

The MEP expressed confidence that, at the parliamentary elections due on 30 November, Moldovan citizens would show political maturity and elect political forces able to offer them a European future.

Delegation to the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee Chair, Romanian MEP Andi Cristea said that Moldova had a European vocation. "The rigorous enforcement of reforms will allow Moldovan citizens to enjoy the benefits of the Association Agreement with the EU quite soon", said Andi Cristea.
