Biography of Acting President of the Republic of Moldova Marian Lupu, 2010-2012

Mr. Marian Lupu was born on June 20, 1966 in municipality of Balti. He graduated in 1983 from Secondary School No. 1 from Chisinau (currently “Gheorghe Asachi” High School). The same year he enrolled at the Faculty if Economics and Commerce of the State University of Moldova, which he graduated in 1987. During 1987-1991 Mr. Lupu attended postgraduate courses at Moscow Academy of Economics and State University of Moldova after which in 1991 he achieved the title of Ph. D. in economics. 

Mr. Lupu worked since 1991 in the Foreign Economic Relations Department of the Ministry of Economy as senior specialist, then head of section, head of direction, becoming in 1997 director of Foreign Economic Relations Department. Concomitantly, he was in office of Executive Director of TACIS Program-Moldova during 1992-2000. 

In 1994 Marian Lupu attended trainings in macroeconomy at the Institute of International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC and in 1996 – training in international trade at the Institute of World Trade Organization in Geneva. 

On May 24, 2001 he was appointed Vice Minister of Economy and on August 5, 2003 took over the position of Minister of Economy of the Republic of Moldova. 

On March 6, 2005 Mr. Lupu was elected Member of Parliament of the Republic of Moldova on the list of the Communist Party of the Republic of Moldova. On March 24, 2005 he was elected Chairman of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. 

During April-July, 2009 Marian Lupu was Member of Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. Since June 2009 he is the leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova, and on July 19 he was elected president of this party. During July 2009-September 2010 he was Member of Parliament, leader of the faction of Democratic Party of Moldova. 

During December 2010 – March 2012 Lupu was Chairman of Parliament, Acting President of the Republic of Moldova. 

Mr. Marian Lupu knows French, English and Russian.

He is married and has two children.
